Rethinking urban heat stress: Assessing risk and adaptation options across socioeconomic groups in Bonn, Germany

With climate change and socioeconomic trends expected to exacerbate the risk of urban heat stress, implementing adaptation measures is paramount limit adverse impacts on inhabitants. Identification best options needs be based sound, localised assessments risk, understood as interaction hazard, exposure vulnerability. Yet a review literature reveals that minimal research date considers perceived among residents. Based household survey in Bonn, Germany, this paper adopts an integrated approach assess how different groups are affected by stress explores connections between indicators vulnerability across groups. Results indicate all at though differing extents for reasons. Exposure was found lowest typically considered higher such older respondents, who same time have highest susceptibility. Students other younger hand, face comparably high coping adaptive capacities. At time, each group has its own capacities with potential mitigate risk. The study shows inhabitants beyond “classic groups” usually addressed policy ways may not accounted current policy.
